"A wind blew out of a cloud by night," is used by Poe to explain Annabel Lee's cause of death. Since Annabel Lee's kingdom is next to the sea, cold night air easily blows through her castle or kingdom. This cold, moist air rolling off of the ocean made Annabel Lee sick, eventually leading to her death. Catching minor illnesses such as a cold or fever were commonly fatal in the 1800's.
